Off-Road Capability of the 2022 Wagoneer

Presented by Quigley CDJR

In 1963, the Jeep Wagoneer made its first appearance and launched the brand into the future by leveling up on capability and luxury. It became the first car brand to mate a 4x4 system with an automatic transmission. Looking to the future, the Wagoneer will return for the 2022 model year once again, moving the brand forward. The 2022 Wagoneer will be its own extension of the Jeep Brand. In addition to a world-class luxurious interior, the Wagoneer will have a level of on and off-road capability that only Jeep can provide! The Wagoneer will return with three of Jeep's legendary four-wheel-drive systems, Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II, with an Electronic Limited Slip Rear Differential. Every Wagoneer drivetrain will boast Jeep's 80 years of creating the most off-road capable cars in the world. It's not just the drivetrains that give the Wagoneer its iconic capability. Quadra-Lift Air Suspension and Selec-Terrain Traction Management also come standard. When off-roading, the Wagoneer has up to 24 inches of water fording capability and a 48:1 crawl ratio. As you can tell, a lot goes into making the 2022 Wagoneer the most capable vehicle in its class. Continue reading below to learn more!

What is Quadra-Trac I?

The first available four-wheel-drive system is Quadra-Trac I. This is a full-time 4WD system that gives drivers all the 4WD capability without needing to pull a lever or flip a switch. The system uses a network of sensors to detect wheel slippage and counteract it by transferring up to 100% of available torque to the axle with the most traction. This ensures that drivers get smooth operation no matter what road conditions they encounter. The lightweight single-speed transfer case helps provide peak fuel economy as well.

What's Different About Quadra-Trac II?

Quadra-Trac II acts similarly to Quadra-Trac I in the sense that it can detect tire slip and counteract it. The main difference is that instead of a single-speed transfer case, the one employed by Quadra-Trac II has two speeds, allowing it to get torque to where it needs to go quicker. It also can predict when the vehicle moves quickly from a full stop and uses throttle control to limit or eliminate traction before it occurs.

How is Quadra-Drive II Different?

Quadra-Drive II is the top-tier drivetrain for the 2022 Wagoneer. This is because, while the previous drivetrains use a mechanical limited-slip differential, this one combines a two-speed transfer case with an Electronic Limited Slip Rear Differential. This allows the system to anticipate a loss of traction and adjust itself to limit or avoid slippage. Quadra-Drive II also brings the best rock-crawling capability with an active 4-low range.

What is Selec-Terrain and How Does it Work?

Selec-Terrain is Jeep's traction management system that will come standard on all 2022 Wagoneer models. It has five drive modes that can be manually selected by drivers. Auto mode puts the 4WD system in control and allows it to sense road conditions and adjust itself accordingly. Sport mode is available at the push of a button and will put the air suspension in Aero mode, dropping the ground clearance to 7.4 inches and adjusts throttle control to provide a fun-to-drive on-road driving experience. Rock mode raises the air suspension to the maximum ground clearance of 10 inches and coordinates the throttle, transfer case, and differentials to provide low-speed crawling control. Snow mode adjusts the traction control to limit wheel slippage and provide excellent grip on snow-covered roads. Lastly, Sand/Mud mode optimizes the traction control and air suspension to react to wheel spin instantaneously and seamlessly transfer torque to the wheels with the most traction to prevent slippage in sandy and muddy conditions.

How Does Quadra-Lift Work?

Quadra-Lift Air Suspension gives the Wagoneer 3.6-inches of lift span using air springs on all four corners. Designers chose this system to provide a smooth ride on all road surfaces and optimal ground clearance wherever your travels take you. Quadra-lift has five adjustable ride height settings, Normal Ride Height (NRH), Off-Road 1, Off-Road 2, Park Mode, and Aero Mode. The Wagoneer will have an NRH of 8 inches. When Off-Road 1 is selected, Quadra-Lift will rise to 9 inches of ground clearance while Off-Road 2 raises it to the maximum ride height of 10 inches. Park Mode lowers the Wagoneer's height by 1.6 inches to allow easy access for all passengers. Aero Mode lowers the suspension by 0.6 inches to provide maximum fuel economy and performance. When the vehicle is in Eco Mode, Aero Mode will automatically be engaged.
