Ever wonder if it is REALLY that important to get your vehicle's oil changed on a regular basis? The answer is, YES, it is. Your car's engines is made up of many moving parts. To avoid damage, those parts need to be properly. Oil in the engine provides that. Over time and the miles you dirve, that oil breaks down. It gets contaminated with dust, dirt and debris from the engine as well as the environment. And once that happens, the oil cannot do its job as well as it could when it was clean. Besdies maintaining lubrication oil serves other roles. It cools engine components, removes engine wear particles and sludge, and even improves gas mileage. 

 

There are benefits to both DIY oil changes and professional oil change, it all depends on what your are comfortable with. Doing your own oil changes can save money. But if you are not 100% sure what you are doing, it is better to leave it to the professionals. Another benefit to DIY is that you can do it on your own time. If you decide you want to change your oil at 10 pm and have it ready to go for the morning you can do that.

 

However, taking it to your local dealership also has some benefits. First of all, they are setup to properly dispose of the old oil.  You can't just throw engine oil away or dump it in your yard. You have to find an approved motor oil recycling center and put the oil in an approved container. Then you'll have to transport the oil to one of these centers yourself.  Having a professional oil changes gives peace of mind that your oil change will be done correctly. There is no worrying about what to do with the used engine oil because your mechanic will take care of that. While your mechanic is doing the oil change they may also notice if something else is a concern and can let you know before it becomes a bigger problem.
