2022 Wagoneer vs Ford Expedition

For those of you who are currently in the market for a new vehicle, there’s no doubt that you’ve been bombarded with claims about which car is the best option on the market. In the competitive SUV segment, each three-row SUV is vying to be the most spacious, comfortable, luxurious, and capable. As the customer, you want to make sure whichever car you choose has stylish and accommodating features, excellent safety, new technology, and the power to withstand any adventure. Today, we’ll be taking a look at two different SUVs to see how they compare in these areas and more. The first option is the 2022 Wagoneer, which has a best-in-class towing capacity, brand new infotainment system, and modern design. The second option is the 2021 Ford Expedition, which follows the same basic theme as the version from 2018. Which of these two vehicles will come out on top? Keep reading to learn more!

2022 Wagoneer Power & Handling

The Wagoneer stands out from the crowd thanks to its best-in-class towing capacity, and off-road capability seldom found on competing vehicles. When properly equipped, the Wagoneer can tow up to 10,000 pounds, and it has three available 4X4 systems, the Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. Not only that, but it also offers Quadra-Lift Air Suspension which can create up to 10 inches of ground clearance. In terms of off-roading, the Wagoneer has the available Selec-Terrain Traction Management system with multiple modes, and it can also handle up to 24 inches of water fording. Under the hood, the Wagoneer features a 5.7-liter V8 engine paired with a mild-hybrid system powered by a 48-volt battery. This system supplies the Wagoneer with 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque, as well as being exceptionally fuel-efficient.

2021 Ford Expedition Power & Handling

The 2021 Ford Expedition unfortunately does not possess the same off-road acumen as the Wagoneer. Its capabilities are pretty straightforward, providing a smooth and stable drive, though not necessarily quick due to its large size. The lineup features five trim levels, all of which are powered by a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain is rated at 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, with the exception of the Platinum trim level which has a special configuration producing 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. The standard drivetrain for all models is rear-wheel drive, although 4-wheel drive is available across the board. The Expedition has a maximum towing capacity of 9,300 pounds which sounds impressive on its own, but unfortunately pales in comparison to the Wagoneer’s 10,000-pound capacity.

2022 Wagoneer Features & Design

The 2022 Wagoneer’s two trim levels both feature a clean, modern design that celebrates its American craftsmanship. There are two available configurations for either seven or eight passengers, featuring two captain’s chairs or one bench seat in the second row. The interior is upholstered in soft Nappa leather, and the front seats are heated and ventilated with power lumbar support. The Wagoneer ushers in the newest model of the Uconnect system, the Uconnect 5, with a standard 10.1-inch touchscreen. The system features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as multiple user profiles. Other tech features include wireless smartphone charging, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and an available front-passenger touchscreen. It also has an impressively thorough safety package with standard features like blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

2021 Ford Expedition Features & Design

Though the Expedition is the largest model Ford produces, the 2021 model year brought along a curveball in the form of the new XL trim level. The XL is the new base-level trim, and it seats up to five passengers in contrast to the rest of the lineup which seats up to eight. The XL also lacks the 8-inch infotainment touchscreen found on other models, and the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Upper trim levels, however, do seat up to eight passengers with available leather upholstery, and other features like tri-zone automatic climate control, heated seats in the first and second rows, and LED exterior lighting. All models feature the Ford CoPilot 360 safety suite, though adaptive cruise control is not included on all trim levels.

Conclusion:

All in all, comparing these two SUVs illustrates the fact that the 2022 Wagoneer stands head and shoulders above the competition! From its best-in-class towing capacity, to its upscale and luxurious interior, the Wagoneer truly does combine the best of both worlds.
