If there’s one thing all of us here in Pennsylvania know, it’s that winters can be absolutely brutal. Not only do you have to personally deal with the cold and the ice, but driving in the winter months can be incredibly hazardous. While we can never accurately forecast how much snow or ice we’re going to get, we all know that at least a few large storms will travel through the state. Hopefully, with a few of these helpful tips, you’ll be prepared for anything that mother nature can throw at you. Winterize your vehicle

Perhaps the first step, even before you get behind the wheel of your vehicle, is to have your vehicle winterized. This means making sure that you are up to date with brakes, fluids, and fuel. It’s a well-known tip by now that during the winter you should keep your fuel tank half full at all times. At the same time, you want to make sure that you have had your oil changed somewhat recently, and all of your other fluids are at the recommended levels. In the same line of thinking, your tires deserve extra attention this time of year! Whether that means making sure that they are inflated properly, or getting new tires if your treads have worn down enough, do not skip off your tires. Finally, make sure that your lights are all working, and you have fresh wiper blades.

Accelerate and decelerate slowly

One general rule when driving in the winter months is to do everything as slowly and deliberately as possible. While we all have the instinct to press down hard on the brakes or to shoot off fast from a stop sign, winter is when you should take some extra care. Ice and snow mean that you have less traction, and that traction means you could end up losing control of your vehicle. However, if you slow down at a snail's pace, and begin to anticipate when you really need to be at a complete stop, you can hopefully avoid fishtailing, or ending off of the road.

3-4 second rule

During everyday driving conditions, it has been recommended that you stay 3-4 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you. However, we want to mention that if it’s snowing, or there’s ice, that rule should be increased to 6-8 seconds. This gives you more time to react should something occur, and going to back what we discussed previously, allow you to press down on the brakes at a slower pace.

Emergency kit

The very last tip we have for you could potentially be the most important one. While you can’t see into the future, you can be prepared for anything that might happen. That’s why we highly recommend that everyone who’s about to face a Pennsylvanian winter have an emergency kit ready. These kits usually include a flashlight, batteries, non-perishable foods, water, extra warm clothes, and a jumper cable. You can personalize these kits, but the goal is to make sure that if you have problems with your vehicle, you will still be in good hands.
